Physical Rehabilitation Q & A

What is meant by physical rehabilitation?

Physical rehabilitation, sometimes called physical medicine and rehabilitation, is a recovery method that seeks to restore function. Also called physiatry, it has a broader scope of goals than physical therapy.

Physical therapy refers to restoring function, mobility, strengthening, minimizing pain, and improving fitness. It can be part of the rehabilitation process, physical medicine and rehabilitation refers to the entire process of getting a patient back to their original or optimal state.

Whereas physical therapy focuses exclusively on the patient’s physical abilities, rehabilitation is more concerned with treating injuries and disabilities, helping patients recover from medical conditions, and allowing them to live without assistance.

Rehabilitation aims to help a person function independently at home and in their community (as much as possible) with or without assistance after treatment.

People commonly undergo physical rehabilitation after having surgery. However, this recovery method can also help relieve some chronic pain, like spine and nerves.

Why would I need physical rehabilitation?

Those who may benefit from physical rehabilitation include any combination of the following:

  • Stroke or brain injury
  • Physical trauma
  • Injuries to the spinal cord, nerves, bones, or joints
  • Injuries to muscles and/or connective tissues
  • Surgery
  • Certain medical conditions

Some conditions render people unable to perform everyday tasks, and physical rehabilitation can help them learn to do these things again. Rehabilitation also helps patients determine alternative methods for doing what they used to.

What does physical rehabilitation entail?

Physical rehabilitation may include:

  • Physical therapy
  • Modifying home environment
  • Using assistive devices and prosthetics
  • Medication

Dr. Alexeev evaluates your needs and recommends a plan customized to your needs and lifestyle. Treatment always takes the most conservative path possible because Dr. Alexeev wants to help you enjoy a pain-free life with as little treatment downtime as possible.

Most patients improve dramatically with nonsurgical and minimally invasive care like physical medicine and rehabilitation, anti-inflammatory medication, joint injections like anesthetics and corticosteroids, simple or complex nerve blocks, restorative therapies like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, and radiofrequency ablation (after positive effects from a nerve block).

Dr. Alexeev believes in multidisciplinary care and may recommend physical therapy, chiropractic, or acupuncture to work alongside your pain management treatment.

Pain is disruptive, but modern treatments and physical rehabilitation methods can help stop disruptions and return you to an active life. Call Atlantic Spine and Joint Pain Center LLC today or click online booking to make an appointment.
