Regenerative Medicine Q & A

What is restorative medicine?

In medical treatments, restorative medicine uses regenerative substances living biological substances like human blood platelets and cellular tissue.

These specially prepared biological substances capture and enhance the human body’s extraordinary healing abilities. Restorative medicine is making significant strides in chronic pain management.

When might I need restorative medicine treatments?

Restorative medicine treatments are an effective way to stimulate healing and relieve pain. Among the conditions it treats are:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Ligament injuries
  • Tendon injuries
  • Cartilage injuries like meniscus tears

If your acute or chronic condition causes severe pain and traditional treatments like physical therapy and medication don’t help, Dr. Alexeev might recommend restorative medicine.

How do restorative medicine treatments work?

Restorative medicine treatments take one of several paths based on your individual needs. Dr. Alexeev uses state-of-the-art restorative medicine processes at Atlantic Spine and Joint Pain Center LLC.

One of the most common restorative medicine procedures, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, starts withdrawing one or more small vials of blood from your arm.

Centrifugation (high-speed spinning) pulls the most potent healing cells (the platelets) and the plasma (the liquid part of the blood) out of the blood to make the PRP. The red blood cells aren’t used in this treatment and are discarded.

When you experience internal damage, blood platelets move naturally to that site to help you heal. But the initial injury response doesn’t last long, and the platelets move on.

PRP boosts that injury response. It’s a powerful substance, with up to 10 times as many platelets as whole blood. Dr. Alexeev injects PRP directly around your injury, and this large influx of platelets powers up the recovery process.

In addition to their own healing qualities, platelets attract other powerful cells. So, PRP recruits the body’s “master” cells to help the healing process even more. Those master cells are blank slates that can transform into any cell needed, from blood and bone to connective tissue and organs.

There are also other restorative medicine treatments, including those containing master cells from your own body or donors. Dr. Alexeev explains all the restorative medicine methods and how they can help your condition.
