Genicular Nerve Blocks and Radiofrequency Ablation
Genicular nerve blocks and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) are advanced, non-surgical treatments for chronic knee pain—especially in patients with osteoarthritis or after knee replacement surgery.
Step 1: Genicular Nerve Block
A diagnostic injection of local anesthetic is used to temporarily block the small sensory nerves (genicular nerves) around the knee to confirm they are the source of pain.
Step 2: Radiofrequency Ablation
If the block is successful twice, radiofrequency energy is applied through a specialized needle to precisely disrupt these nerves, providing long-term pain relief.
