Intercostal Nerve Blocks with Ultrasound or Fluoroscopic Guidance
Intercostal nerve blocks are used to relieve pain in the chest or upper abdomen caused by conditions such as rib fractures, post-surgical pain, or nerve irritation (e.g., postherpetic neuralgia). A local anesthetic, often combined with a steroid, is injected near the affected intercostal nerve.
Using ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance, the injection is precisely placed between the ribs to maximize accuracy and safety. This minimally invasive outpatient procedure can provide both diagnostic insight and effective pain relief.
